Manual Fact-Checking
Manually verify any claim you encounter while browsing the web.
How to Use
- Highlight the text containing the claim you want to verify
- Right-click to open the context menu
- Select "Fact Check with FactSentinel"
- Wait a few seconds for AI analysis
- Review the verdict, confidence score, and explanation
Understanding Results
TRUE
The claim is factually accurate based on available evidence.
MOSTLY TRUE
The claim is largely accurate with minor inaccuracies or missing context.
MIXED
The claim contains both accurate and inaccurate elements.
FALSE
The claim is factually incorrect based on available evidence.
Each verdict includes a confidence percentage. Higher scores (80%+) indicate stronger evidence. Lower scores suggest the claim may need more research.
Passive Monitoring
Let FactSentinel automatically scan web pages for potential misinformation as you browse.
How It Works
- Enable passive monitoring in extension settings
- Configure which site types to monitor (news, social media, blogs, forums)
- As you browse, FactSentinel automatically scans page content
- When a questionable claim is detected, you'll see a notification
- Click to see details or dismiss the alert
Sensitivity Levels
- High: Alerts for all potentially questionable claims
- Moderate: Balanced - alerts for likely false claims (recommended)
- Low: Only alerts for high-confidence false claims
Smart Notifications
FactSentinel uses intelligent notification management to avoid alert fatigue:
- First few alerts show full details with explanation
- Subsequent alerts become more concise
- After many scans, just a badge counter to check at your convenience
Passive monitoring uses your monthly scan allowance. Free users get 20 passive scans/month. Upgrade to Premium for more.
Platform vs Your Own Keys
FactSentinel offers two ways to fact-check, each with different privacy and cost tradeoffs.
🌐 Platform Mode
Best for: Most users who want simplicity.
- We handle all AI processing
- Monthly check limits apply
- Data encrypted & never sold
- No API keys needed
🔑 Your Own Keys (BYOK)
Best for: Privacy-focused users.
- Use your own OpenAI/Anthropic keys
- Queries bypass our servers entirely
- Zero-knowledge privacy
- You pay AI costs directly
Setting Up Your Own Keys
- Get an API key from OpenAI or Anthropic
- Open extension settings (click the FactSentinel icon)
- Paste your API key in the appropriate field
- The extension automatically switches to your own keys mode
Add both OpenAI and Anthropic keys to enable consensus mode - both AIs analyze claims for higher accuracy.

Troubleshooting
Common Issues
Try these steps:
- Refresh the page you're on
- Make sure you're logged in at factsentinel.com
- Check that the extension is enabled in chrome://extensions
- Try removing and re-adding the extension
Your session may have expired. Visit factsentinel.com/login to log in again, then refresh the page you were checking.
You've used all your monthly checks. Options:
- Upgrade to Premium for more checks
- Switch to your own keys with OpenAI/Anthropic
- Wait until the 1st of next month when limits reset
If you're using your own API keys, check these common issues:
- Make sure you copied the full API key without extra spaces
- Verify your API key has available credits/quota
- Check that the key is for the correct provider (OpenAI vs Anthropic)
- Try generating a new API key from the provider's dashboard
AI analysis typically takes 3-10 seconds. If it's consistently slow:
- Check your internet connection
- Try a shorter text selection
- AI providers may have temporary slowdowns during peak times
