Multiple rigorous studies on universal basic income and similar unconditional cash transfer programs have consistently found that recipients do not stop working entirely. The Finland UBI experiment (2017-2018), the U.S.-based OpenResearch study led in part by OpenAI's Sam Altman, and the Stockton Economic Empowerment Demonstration (SEED) all found that most recipients continued working, with employment rates remaining statistically similar to control groups who did not receive payments.

The evidence shows modest, targeted changes in work behavior rather than mass withdrawal from the labor force. Some studies found small reductions in hours worked, often because recipients used the financial cushion to seek better-suited jobs, pursue education or training, or reduce hours dedicated to multiple low-paying jobs. Others found improvements in job quality and stability, as cash assistance reduced the pressure to accept the first available position regardless of fit or pay. In Finland, recipients reported improved wellbeing and reduced stress without significant employment declines. The Stockton study similarly found full-time employment among recipients increased compared to the control group.

A common misconception fuels this claim: critics often conflate "some reduction in hours" with "complete cessation of work," which the data does not support. Economic theory predicting large disincentive effects from guaranteed income has largely not materialized in real-world pilots. While UBI experiments vary in design, duration, and population studied, the overwhelming consensus across peer-reviewed research is that recipients remain engaged in the labor market, contradicting the notion that guaranteed income causes people to abandon work altogether.
