The human body is not naturally immune to cancer. Cancer arises when cells accumulate genetic mutations that disrupt normal growth regulation, allowing them to divide uncontrollably and evade the body's natural defenses. While the immune system does possess mechanisms to detect and destroy abnormal cells, including specialized immune cells that patrol for malignancies, this surveillance system is imperfect. Cancer cells frequently develop ways to hide from immune detection or actively suppress immune responses, allowing tumors to grow undetected.

If the body were naturally immune to all cancers, this disease simply would not exist as a major health concern.

A common misconception fueling this claim is confusion between the immune system's partial protective role and complete immunity. The immune system can sometimes eliminate small numbers of abnormal cells before they become tumors, which may lead to the false belief that natural defenses alone are sufficient. However, factors such as aging, genetic predisposition, environmental exposures, and random cellular errors can overwhelm these defenses. This is precisely why medical interventions, including early detection screening, surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, and immunotherapy, remain essential tools in treating and managing cancer effectively.
