The idea that the Coriolis effect controls the direction water spirals down a drain is a popular myth, but it does not hold up to scientific scrutiny. The Coriolis effect, which results from Earth's rotation, does influence large-scale weather systems like hurricanes and ocean currents, but its force is far too weak to have any measurable impact on something as small and short-lived as water draining from a sink or bathtub.

The physics behind this comes down to scale. The Coriolis effect depends on the size of the system and the duration over which it acts. Hurricanes span hundreds of miles and develop over days, giving the Coriolis force time to influence their rotation. A sink, by contrast, drains in seconds and measures mere inches across. In this context, the direction water spins is governed by far more powerful local factors: the shape of the basin, the design and angle of the drain, residual currents from how the sink was filled, and even tiny irregularities in the surface. These factors overwhelm any influence from Earth's rotation by many orders of magnitude.

Scientific experiments have confirmed this. Under tightly controlled laboratory conditions, with perfectly symmetrical basins and stabilized water, researchers have observed the Coriolis effect in small-scale drainage, but only after eliminating all other variables and waiting extended periods for residual motion to settle. In everyday, real-world conditions, such control is impossible, so sinks and toilets drain in whichever direction their specific circumstances dictate, regardless of hemisphere. The common misconception that sinks drain clockwise in the Northern Hemisphere and counterclockwise in the Southern Hemisphere is not supported by evidence and can be disproven by observing drains in the same hemisphere spinning in different directions.
