The Cold War, spanning roughly 1947 to 1991, was defined by intense geopolitical rivalry between the United States and the Soviet Union, yet the two superpowers never engaged in direct military combat against each other. Instead, their competition played out through proxy wars, espionage, nuclear arms buildups, and ideological struggles for global influence.
