The Big Bang theory does not describe an explosion of matter into a pre-existing empty void. Instead, it describes the expansion of space itself, beginning from an extremely hot, dense state approximately 13.8 billion years ago. There was no "empty space" waiting to be filled; space, time, matter, and energy all originated together and have been expanding ever since. This is a fundamental distinction that cosmologists take great care to emphasize, precisely because the "explosion" framing is so widespread and misleading.

The key evidence supporting this understanding comes from Einstein's general theory of relativity, which describes gravity as the curvature of spacetime itself. Observations such as the cosmic microwave background radiation and the redshift of distant galaxies show that space is stretching uniformly in all directions, not that objects are flying outward from a central point into surrounding emptiness. If the Big Bang were a conventional explosion, there would be a identifiable center and an edge, but no such center has ever been found. Every point in the universe appears to be moving away from every other point, consistent with the fabric of space expanding rather than objects moving through static space.

A common misconception rooted in the term "Big Bang" itself, coined somewhat dismissively by astronomer Fred Hoyle, is that it implies a conventional explosive event with a location and a blast radius. In reality, the theory describes the origin and evolution of space and time, making questions like "what did it explode into" based on a flawed premise, since no external space existed beforehand.
