The claim that seasons are caused by Earth being closer to the Sun in summer is inaccurate and contradicted by basic astronomical evidence. Seasons are actually caused by the tilt of Earth's axis, which is inclined at approximately 23.5 degrees relative to its orbital plane around the Sun. As Earth orbits the Sun over the course of a year, this tilt causes different hemispheres to receive varying amounts of direct sunlight, producing the cycle of seasons.

The clearest evidence against the distance-based explanation is that Earth's Northern and Southern Hemispheres experience opposite seasons at the same time. If proximity to the Sun caused summer, both hemispheres would experience summer simultaneously, since the distance from Earth to the Sun doesn't differ significantly between hemispheres. In reality, when it is summer in North America and Europe, it is winter in Australia and South America, and vice versa. Additionally, Earth is actually slightly closer to the Sun during Northern Hemisphere winter, around early January, and farther away during Northern Hemisphere summer, around early July, which is the opposite of what the claim suggests.

This misconception likely arises from an intuitive but oversimplified assumption that closer proximity to a heat source means more warmth, without accounting for axial tilt. Earth's orbit is only slightly elliptical, and the resulting distance variation has a negligible effect on seasonal temperature compared to the dramatic impact of the tilt, which changes the angle and duration of sunlight hitting different parts of the planet. This axial tilt explanation is well established in astronomy and is supported by consistent observational data from both hemispheres.
