The claim that left-handedness is caused by birth trauma is not supported by modern scientific evidence. This idea, sometimes called the "pathological left-handedness" hypothesis, gained traction in the mid-20th century when researchers noticed correlations between difficult births and left-hand preference. However, subsequent research has shown that handedness is determined primarily by genetics and brain development that occurs well before birth, not by trauma during delivery.

Studies using ultrasound imaging have observed hand preference in fetuses as early as 8 to 10 weeks into pregnancy, long before any birth-related events could occur. Twin studies and genome-wide association research have identified multiple genetic factors linked to handedness, suggesting a complex inheritance pattern rather than an injury-based cause. Brain imaging research also indicates that handedness correlates with which hemisphere of the brain becomes dominant for motor control and language, a developmental process rooted in early neurological organization.

The birth trauma theory likely persisted because a small subset of left-handed individuals may have experienced perinatal complications that affected brain lateralization, creating a misleading correlation. However, correlation does not equal causation, and this explains only a tiny fraction of left-handed people, not the general population. The vast majority of left-handers show no history of birth complications. Approximately 10 percent of the global population is left-handed, a proportion that has remained remarkably stable across cultures and historical periods, further supporting a biological and genetic basis rather than one linked to birth injuries or trauma.
