Gross Domestic Product measures the total monetary value of goods and services produced within a country's borders over a specific period. By design, it only captures transactions that occur in formal markets, meaning activities must involve a monetary exchange to be counted. Unpaid labor performed within households, such as cooking, cleaning, childcare, and caregiving for elderly or sick family members, does not involve market transactions and therefore falls outside GDP's measurement framework.

This exclusion has been well documented by economists for decades. The United Nations System of National Accounts, which provides the international standard for calculating GDP, explicitly excludes most unpaid domestic and care work from official output measures. Economists including Marilyn Waring and organizations like the OECD have highlighted this gap, noting that if unpaid household and care work were assigned monetary value, it would represent a substantial percentage of GDP, some estimates suggest between 10 and 40 percent depending on the country and methodology used. Time-use surveys conducted by national statistical agencies further confirm that billions of hours are spent annually on unpaid caregiving and domestic work that never appear in national income accounts.

A common misconception is that this omission reflects an oversight rather than a structural limitation of GDP itself. In reality, GDP was never designed to measure overall well-being or the full scope of economic activity, only market-based production. This has led to the development of alternative or supplementary measures, such as satellite accounts and time-use valuations, aimed at capturing the economic contribution of unpaid labor that traditional GDP calculations omit.
