Albert Einstein explicitly and repeatedly rejected the idea of a personal God who intervenes in human affairs, rewards and punishes behavior, or responds to prayer. In his own words, written in a 1954 letter now widely known as the "God Letter," Einstein stated that "the word God is for me nothing more than the expression and product of human weaknesses" and described the Bible as "pretty childish" in its portrayal of a personal deity. He was clear that any anthropomorphic conception of God did not align with his understanding of the universe.

Einstein's actual religious and philosophical views align closely with what is often called Spinozan pantheism, named after philosopher Baruch Spinoza. He described his sense of the divine as awe at the order, harmony, and lawfulness of the cosmos rather than belief in a deity who intervenes in individual lives or historical events. Einstein famously wrote, "I believe in Spinoza's God, who reveals himself in the lawful harmony of all that exists, but not in a God who concerns himself with the fates and actions of human beings."

The confusion largely stems from Einstein's frequent use of the word "God" as a metaphor in scientific discussions, such as his famous remark that "God does not play dice with the universe," referring to his discomfort with quantum indeterminacy rather than any literal theological claim. This poetic and philosophical language has often been misappropriated by both religious and atheist commentators to support conflicting interpretations of his beliefs, but Einstein's own writings consistently affirm a naturalistic, non-interventionist worldview rather than belief in a personal, intervening God.
