Ancient Chinese astronomers maintained detailed and systematic records of celestial events for over two thousand years, and their observations of "guest stars"—sudden new points of light in the sky—represent some of the earliest documented supernovae in human history. The most famous example is the supernova of 185 CE, recorded in the Book of Later Han, which appeared in the region of the Southern Gate constellation and remained visible for about eight months. This predates any comparable European record by well over a thousand years. Another landmark observation is the supernova of 1054, meticulously documented by Chinese court astronomers, which produced the remnant now known as the Crab Nebula.

The evidence for these ancient sightings comes from official Chinese court astronomical records, which were maintained by imperial astronomers whose duties included tracking unusual celestial phenomena for astrological and calendrical purposes. Modern astronomers have cross-referenced these historical texts with the physical remnants of exploded stars, confirming that the timing, location, and duration described in the ancient records align with what is now understood about supernova remnants.

A common misconception is that Tycho Brahe's 1572 observation was the first scientific record of a supernova. While Brahe's work was groundbreaking for European astronomy and helped challenge the Aristotelian idea of an unchanging heavens, Chinese astronomers had already been recording such events for centuries, demonstrating a long-standing tradition of careful celestial observation that predates the European scientific revolution.
